Jodhpurs are meant to be worn with ankle-high boots (”jodhpur boots”, or “paddock boots”), and so extend all the way down to the foot. Traditionally, children wore jodhpurs and adults wore horse riding jodhpurs , at least on formal occasions like horse shows and foxhunting. Jodhpurs are worn for showing, cross country events, when show jumping, during dressage competitions and for everyday riding. The colour worn is usually dependent on the type of riding to be done, neutral colours are not often practical when galloping across muddy fields.

Jodhpurs are sometimes confused with horse riding jodhpurs , another type of pant often worn by riders, but the style of horse riding jodhpurs is somewhat different, and in competition riders are usually directed to wear one style or the other.
